Smart Campus: The Next-Generation Campus in Taiwan and Hong Kong
Due to the pandemic and digitalization, as a high-end form of smart education system, the smart campus has received increasing research attention in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
By incorporating a surveillance system, an emergency notification system, and campus police dispatch, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Taiwai established the Security Center and placed 18 red emergency booths with security cameras on every side all around the campus. This is the first security center to incorporate AI among universities in Taiwan. When the emergency button is pressed, the system immediately connects to the Security Center, and the time of support arrival is thus shortened from 10 minutes to 3 minutes. Within six months from the establishment, the Security Center has already assisted with several traffic accidents and emergencies in NCKU campus.
Hong Kong is also improving their campus with smart technologies. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has tapped Cisco to provide Wi-Fi 6 solutions and Digital Network Architecture (DNA) solutions to power its smart campus development.
Over 6,000 Cisco Wi-Fi 5 Access Points have been installed across the high-density user areas such as the Academic Concourse, canteen, library and teaching venues. The Cisco Wi-Fi 6 solutions will provide seamless network connectivity for over 20,000 students and staff with faster troubleshooting. The solutions also help the IT team optimising their network performance, reducing troubleshooting time and lowering the cost of network operations.
Simply put, smart campuses are like smart cities where devices and applications create new experiences or services and facilitate operational efficiency.
WiFi networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other advanced technologies have enabled schools in Taiwan and Hong Kong to transform into digitally connected campuses that are benefiting students, faculty, and their surrounding communities. Many market researchers believe that smart campuses will also become the future of higher education. There is a huge market potential and is likely to become a hot investment for tech companies doing AI or 5G business.
